The Story Behind Butterfinger Puppy Chow
This Butterfinger Puppy Chow is just as decadent as it looks and sounds. However, if I am being honest, I didn’t grow up calling this delightful snack Puppy Chow. My family always called it trash because it was easiest if you mixed it up in a big (clean) trash bag.
It wasn’t until I met my husband, that I learned “trash” is not what most families call it. I had heard of muddy buddies, but I’m pretty sure when he told me his family called it “puppy chow” that was the first time I had heard it called that. It turns out, that is probably the most common name for it!
If I being honest, I don’t think it matters if you call it puppy chow, muddy buddies, or even trash, it’s going to still be delicious despite the name.
Butterfingers are probably one of my least favorite candy bars, but throw it in a recipe of puppy chow and it immediately becomes one of my favorites. I’m always down for a good chocolate peanut butter combo, and the butterfinger just enhances all of that peanut butter flavor you already get in puppy chow. To be honest, I’m always fighting my kids on the big clumps of puppy chow. The more cereal that sticks together, the better!

I chose to use Honey Nut Chex in this recipe because it adds just a little extra sweetness and I think the cereal itself is a little more crisp. Once you melt the butter, peanut butter, and chocolate chips together, you pour that delicious goodness on top of the cereal, stir it up really well, shake the powdered sugar on top, and finish it with all of those butterfinger crumbs.
There is no doubt in my mind that you won’t be able to stay out of this butterfinger puppy chow.
Ingredients Needed for Butterfinger Puppy Chow

- Honey Nut Chex – you will need a total of six cups. You can also choose to use another flavor of Chex if you prefer that.
- Peanut Butter- I prefer Jif Naturals creamy peanut butter. If you are wanting to add more texture, crunch could also work.
- Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips – I know everyone has there opinion on chocolate chip flavors, but I do think milk chocolate would make this too sweet.
- Butterfinger Bits- I used Butterfinger Bits that you can find near the chocolate chips. However, you can also chop up Butterfinger candy bars and get the same outcome.
- Powdered Sugar- Whatever brand of powdered sugar you prefer will work.
- Butter- I always have and always will stock and use salted butter.
