The Story Behind Crumbl Oreo Tres Leches Cake

I’ll be the first to admit, I’ve never been the biggest fan of Crumbl. However, with my husband being a huge fan of cookies, I’ve tried my fair share. When they first started, I could not stand their sugar cookie. I felt like it had too much almond extract. And then you have their chocolate chip cookies. They use milk chocolate chips, and I’m a firm believer that semi-sweet chips belong in cookies.

Fast forward a few years, and we are fresh from living in Europe. You better believe we started hitting up our favorite dessert and cookie shops once we got back to Utah. My husband even has a Crumbl Wednesday at his office, so he is always telling me about his favorite flavors.

A couple of months ago, Crumbl started introducing cakes and cheesecakes into the mix! To say I was excited was an understatement. I’m a huge fan of cake, so I was down for a few more Crumbl stops. If you know me well, you know that I have a hard time saying no to anything s’mores flavored or anything made with Oreos.

When the advertisement for the week came out, and I saw that there was an Oreo Tres Leches cake, I knew it was a must. We made the trip late on a Saturday night and I was blown away. I love a good cake, especially a tres leches or a better than sex type of cake that is soaked. This was kind of like a combination between those two cakes in the best ways!

As far as cakes go, this is pretty simple and really hard to mess up. I would recommend making it a night in advance. That will give all of the milks time to really soak into the cake and even enhance in flavor. If you want more Oreos on top, fill free to add more. You really can’t go wrong! I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as my family has and it becomes a regular in your dessert rotation.

Ingredients Needed for Crumbl Tres Leches Oreo Cake

  • All-purpose flour
  • Granulated white sugar
  • Good dutch processed cocoa powder – I prefer to use this brand
  • Whole Milk – for the cake you can use whole milk or buttermilk, whichever you have on hand. However, you will need whole milk for the tres leches portion.
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Salt/Baking Powder/Baking Soda/Salt – these are your baking essentials that you probably already have stocked in your pantry. Just make sure they are not expired.
  • Vanilla– I’ll be honest, I don’t notice a different between artificial vanilla and vanilla extract when it’s in a chocolate cake, so you can use whichever one you prefer.
  • Heavy Whipping Cream
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Oreos

Crumbl Oreo Tres Leches Cake

Ingredients

For the Chocolate Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1¾ cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup dutch processed cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • ¾ tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup hot water
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Tres Leches

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk

For the Topping

  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 10 oreos

Instructions

For the Cake

  1. 1In the bowl of your electric mixer, add all of your dry ingredients (flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt). On slow speed, mix the dry ingredients until they are "sifted" together. Maybe 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  2. 2Add in all of the remaining wet ingredients (eggs, milk, water, oil, and vanilla). Mix for 2-3 minutes until well combined. You will want to stop the mixer and scrape down the side and bottom about halfway through to ensure even mixing.
  3. 3Pour cake batter into a well greased 9x13 pan. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until done. The center of the cake should not be jiggly and should bounce back when gently touched.
  4. 4While the cake is baking, combine the three milks together in a small bowl or a large glass measuring cup that has a spout. Slowly mix together the whole milk, sweetened condensed milk, and cream until well combined.
  5. 5When the cake is done, pull it out of the oven and use a fork to poke holes throughout the entire cake.
  6. 6Pour the tres leches mixture on top evenly. Refrigerate overnight or until completely chilled.
  7. 7Once the cake is chilled you are going to use your whisk attachment for your mixer and mix the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla together until stiff peaks form. You can pipe the cream on top of the cake using a piping bag and my favorite 1M piping top or you can simply spread it on top using an offset spatula or knife.
  8. 8Use a blender or food processor to turn the 10 Oreos into crumbs. Sprinkle the crumbs on top of the cake. You can use more Oreos if you wish.
  9. 9Store in the refrigerator. The whipped cream will begin to "melt" after the second day, but will still taste great. However, I recommend eating it quickly or making a stabilized whipped cream if you need it to last longer.
